The FOREIGN PHILOSOPHY DISCIPLINE at Nankai University is established by two famous scholars MAO CONG-HU and CHE MING-ZHOU in the 1960s. However, the teaching of foreign philosophy has already begun in the 1920s. Outstanding scholars like TANG YONG-TONG, FENG WEN-QIAN, PANG JING-REN, ZHANG SHI-YING, and WANG WEI-CHENG have all taught courses in western philosophy at Nankai University. The discipline began to enroll master students in 1980 and has been authorized to enroll doctorands since 2003. During the last thirty years, more than a hundred of students (masters, doctors, and postdoctoral researchers) have graduated here. The publication of the textbook History of European Philosophy edited by a team led by Professor Mao in 1980s was an important event for the western philosophy education in China and established the discipline’s status in the Chinese academic world. And the arrival in early 2000s of Professor QIAN JIE who earned his doctor degree in France marked the new chapter of foreign philosophy studies at Nankai. For the moment, the Foreign Philosophy Discipline has a young and promising research team. The domains of research and teaching of its members cover Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Anglo-Saxon Philosophy, German Philosophy, and French Philosophy. Its strong points are modern European philosophy, analytic philosophy, phenomenology, and political philosophy. The members of the discipline have published a series of influential textbooks, academic works, and translations. Concentrating upon the creative interpretation and rigorous analysis of philosophical texts, they wish to make more remarkable contributions to the studies of Western philosophy in China in the future.
